τῦφος, ὁ, name of four kinds of fever, one of which is accompanied by stuport, Hp.Int.39; τῦφοι = frigidae febres, Gloss.; cf. τυφώδης 1.

2. delusion (defined as οἴησις τῶν οὐκ ὄντων ὡς ὄτων), S.E.M.8.5; in this sense Monimus the Cynic said τῦφος τὰ πάντα, S.E. l.c.; τὸ γὰρ ὑποληφθὲν τῦφον εἶναι πᾶν ἔφη (sc. Μόνιμος) Men. 249.7, cf. Metrod.Fr.31, Phld.Piet.21; opp. ἀλήθεια, Ph.2.299; τὰ μὲν τοῦ σώματος ποταμός, τὰ δὲ τῆς ψυχῆς ὄνειρος καὶ τ. M.Ant.2.17, cf. 6.13; οἴημα καὶ τ. Plu.2.81f, cf. ib.c, Arr.Epict.1.8.6, Iamb. 3. colloquially, nonsense, humbug, affectation, τὸν τρόπον μὲν οἶσθά μου ὅτι τῦφος οὐκ ἔνεστιν there is no nonsense about me, Antiph.195.2, cf. Plu.Per.5; ταῦτα τὴν παλαιὰν ἀλαζονείαν ἤλεγξε τῶν Μήδων τῦφον ὄντα κενόν Jul.Or.1.28b, cf. Pl. ap. D.L.6.26:—
similarly in Cynic parodies, Πήρη τις πόλις ἐστὶ μέσῳ ἔνι οἴνοπι τύφῳ Crates Theb.4, cf. Tim038, Jul.Or.6.202c; τὸν τ. μου τροποφόρησον my piece of nonsense, my hobby, Cic.Att.13.29.2; τὰ δὲ πολλὰ καὶ ὄλβια τ. ἔμαρψεν Crates Theb.8 (vv. ll. τύμβος, τάφος).
