ἀπαντάω, impf. ἀπήντων Th.4.127, Dor. 3sg. ἀπάντη BionFr.9.7: fut. ἀπαντήσω Arist.Rh.Al.1432b35, Plb.4.26.5, etc.; but better -ήσομαι Th.4.77, 7.2 and 80, X.HG1.6.3, Lys.2.32, etc.: aor. ἀπήντησα E.Ph.1392, Th.2.20: pf. ἀπήντηκα Ar.Lys.420, D.18.15:—
the Med., used in act. sense by Polyaen.1.21.1 (impf.), al., is censured by Luc.Lex.25; so also pf. ἀπήντημαι Plb.2.37.6, D.H.6.88, etc.

I. mostly of persons, move from a place to meet a person, and generally, meet, encounter, τινί Hdt.8.9, E.Supp.772, etc.; ἐξ ἐναντίας ἀ. Pl.Lg.893e; ἀ. ταῖς ὁμοίαις φύσεσι encounter, fall in with them, D.60.20: abs., ὁ ἀεὶ ἀπαντῶν any one that meets you, any chance person, Pl. R.563c; οἱ ἀπαντῶντες D.36.45, Alex.78, cf. 87.

b. freq. with a Prep., ἀ. τινὶ εἰς τόπον come or go to a place to meet him, meet him at a place, Hdt.2.75; ἐς τωὐτό 6.84; ἐπὶ Τριποδίσκον Th.4.70; τὸν μὲν ἐς τὰς Σίφας ἀ., τὸν δ' ἐπὶ τὸ Δήλιον ib.89: without dat. pers., present oneself at a place, Id.7.1; εἰς Κύζικον X.HG1.3.13; ἀ. ἐνθάδε Ar.Lys.13; δεῦρο πάλιν ἀ. Pl.Tht.210d, etc.

2. freq. in hostile sense, meet in battle, ἀ. δορί (dat. pers. being omitted) E.Ph.1392; ὅπλοις HF542; τοῖς βαρβάροις Μαραθῶνάδε And.1.107; ἀ. Ἀθηναίοις ἐς Τάραντα Th.6.34, cf. 2.20, 3.95; ἀ. πρός τινα Isoc.4.86,90; generally, resist, oppose in any way, νομοθέτῃ ἀ. λέγων .. Pl.Lg.684d; διὰ λόγων νουθετικῶν ἀ. prob. ib.740e; ἀ. τραχέως πρὸς τὰς τῶν πλησιαζόντων ὀργάς Isoc.1.31; ἀ. τοῖς εἰρημένοις rejoin, reply, Id.11.30; τοῖς θορύβοις Arist.Rh.Al. l.c.; πρὸς ἕκαστον D.21.24.

3. freq. as a law-term, meet in open court, τῷ καλεσαμένῳ Pl.Lg.937a, cf. D.39.3, etc.: without dat. pers., ἀ. πρὸς τὴν δίκην present oneself at the trial, Pl.Lg.936e; πρὸς ἣν [δίκην] οὐκ ἀπήντα did not appear to defend his cause, D.21.90; ἀ. πρὸς τὸν διαιτητήν, etc., come before him, Id.40.11, etc.; εἰς ἡμέραν τὴν συγκειμένην ἀ. εἰς τὸ Ἡφαιστεῖον 33.18; ἐπὶ τὰ ἱερά 42.7; ἐπὶ τὴν δίαιταν Test. ap. eund.21.93; ἀ. ἐπὶ τοῖς ἀλλοτρίοις ἀγῶσι to be present at other people's suits, meddle with them, D.21.205: abs., appear in court, 40.16, etc.

4. ἀ. εἰς .. enter into a thing, attempt it, εἰς τὸν ἀγῶνα Pl.Lg.830a; ἀ. εἰς τὴν τίμησιν come to the question of rating, Aeschin.3.198; ἀ. εἰς τὰς χρείας Arist.EN1158a8; ἀ. πρὸς τὰς μαθήσεις Pl.Tht.144b; πρὸς τὴν ἐρώτησιν, τὸ πρόβλημα, Arist. Metaph.1036a14, Ph.213b3; ἀ. πρὸς τὴν τροφήν go to seek it, Id. de.An. 421b12; ἀ. ἐπί .. have recourse to .., D.21.151, 24.193, etc.; ἐπὶ ταύτας τὰς οἰκίας ἀ. οἱ τραγῳδοποιοί Arist.Po.1454a12.

II. of things, come upon one, meet or happen to one, ἀ. δάκρυά μοι E.Ion940, cf. Bion l. c.; τοῖς πρὸς ὑμᾶς ζῶσι τοσαύτην κωφότητα ..παρ' ὑμῶν ἀπαντᾶν D.19.226; ἐπὶ τῶ κεφαλαίψ τῶν πραγμάτων ἀ. [ἡ ῥᾳθυμία] 'comes home to roost', 10.7; ἀ. αὐτῷ κραυγὴ παρὰ τῶν δικαστῶν Aeschin.1.163; μή τίς σοι ἐναντίος λόγος ἀ. Pl.Phd.101a, cf. D.H.4.33, etc.

2. abs., happen, occur, turn out, Ar.Lys.420, Pl.Ep.358e, Arist.Pol. 1302a6, Top.160a23, al.; τούτων ἀπαντώντων Hdt.8.142:—
