ἀπογιγνώσκω, Ion. and later Att. ἀπογευ-γῑνώσκω, fut. -γνώσομαι:—
depart from a judgement, give up a design or intention of doing, τοῦ μάχεσθαι X.An.1.7.19, cf. Plb.1.29.5, etc.; ἀ. τὸ κατὰ γῆν πορεύεσθαι X.HG7.5.7; ἀ. διώκειν Plu.Ant.34, cf. Thes.6; ἀ. μὴ βοηθεῖν resolve not to help, D.15.9, cf.IG22.457.30: c.gen., give up a notion, Simp. in Ph.610.9.

II. c. gen. rei, despair of, τῆς ἐλενθερίας Lys.2.46; οὐδενὸς χρὴ πράγματος ὅλως ἀπογνῶναι Men.131; ὡς ἀνιάτων D.Chr.32.97; ὑπὲρ σφῶν Jul.Or.2.61c: abs., despair, D.4.42 (where some codd. supply ἑαυτῶν), Babr.43.18: c. fut. inf., αἱρήσειν ἀ. Arr. An.3.20.3; ἀκούσεσθαι Luc.Icar.10: c. aor. inf., τὴν πόλιν ἀπέγνω ἑλεῖν Arr.An.1.5.8, cf. D.Chr.32.9.

2. c.acc., give up as hopeless or desperate, τὴν σωτηρίαν Arist.EN1115b2; τὰς πρεσβείας Plb.5.1.5, al.; τὰς ἐλπίδας Id.2.35.1; ἀ. τι ἀπὸ τῶν παρόντων App.Hisp.37; ἀρετῆς ἀκρίβειαν Porph.Antr.36; ἀ. αὑτόν Plb.21.26.14:—
Pass., to be given up, τὰ παρ' ὑμῶν D.19.54; ἐλπίς D.H.5.15; ἐλευθερία Luc. Tyr.6; ἀπεγνωσμέναι ἐλπίδες forlorn hopes, Plb.30.8.3; ἐπιβουλὴ -μένη Hdn.4.4.3; ἀπεγνωσμένοι ἄνθρωποι desperate men, Id.1.16.4 (but ἄνθρωποι ἀπεγνωκότες Plu.Alex. 16); ὑπὸ τῶν ἰατρῶν ἀ. to be despaired of .., Id.Per.13. Adv. ἀπεγνωσμένως in despair, Id.Nic.21.

b. renounce, reject, τι Hp.Medic.4, cf.D.3.33; τινάς Id.6.16, cf. D.C.73.15; φιλίαν Iamb.VP22.102.

III. as law-term, refuse to receive an accusation, reject, γραφήν, ἔνδειξιν, D.22.39,58.17:hence,

2. ἀ. τινός (sc. δίκην vel γραφήν) reject the charge brought against a man, i.e. acquit him, opp. καταγιγνώσκειν τινός, Id.40.39, cf. Aeschin.2.6, etc.; ἀ. τί τινος Is.5.34: c. inf., ἀ. τινὸς μὴ ἀδικεῖν acquit him of wrong, Lys.1.34; also οὐκ ἀπέγνω τῆς δίκης D.34.21.
