παρεγγῠ-άω, hand over to another, entrust or commend to his care, τοῖσι φίλοισι π. τὸν ξεῖνον Hdt.3.8; τὴν ἀρχήν τινι Plu.Ant.11; of life, π. τοῖς ἐπιγιγνομένοις Antipho Soph.50: c. inf., τοῖς φίλοις τηρεῖν παρεγγυηκώς Phld.Piet.110; παῖδα τῇ Ἀθηνᾷ τιθηνεῖσθαι π. D.C.59.28:—

2. of things, recommend, τοῦτ' ἐγὼ π. Men.487, cf. POxy.1101.15 (iv A. D., Pass.), Olymp. Alch.p.94 B. (Med.); μέθοδος ἣν οἱ σοφισταὶ παρεγγυῶσιν Phld.Rh.1.137 S.

II. as a military term, pass on the watchword or word of command along the whole line, παρηγγύων κελευσμὸν ἀλλήλοισι .., " θεῖν', ἀντέρειδε " E.Supp.700; σύνθημα παρεγγυήσας "Ζεὺς σωτήρ" X.Cyr.7.1.10, cf. 3.3.58, Moer.p.324 P.: abs., σπεύδοντες π. ἐπί τινας eager to pass the word to attack them, Plb.7.18.4: without any notion of command,,βοώντων τῶν στρατιωτῶν "θάλαττα, θάλαττα", καὶ παρεγγυώντων X.An.4.7.24: metaph., c. acc. et inf., σημεῖα δ' ἥξειν τῶνδέ μοι παρηγγύα ἢ σεισμὸν ἢ βροντήν τιν' S.OC94.

2. of a general, give the word of command, τινί c. inf., X.Cyr.3.2.8, 7.5.17: c. inf. only, ib.2.3.21, An.4.1.17, etc.:—

3. of soldiers, π. ἀλλήλοις μὴ ἀπολείπεσθαι exhorted one another not .., Id.Cam.37: generally, exhort, π. αὐτοῖς παύσασθαι c. part., Luc.D Mort.1.2, cf. Hierocl. in CA2p.423M.
